Instagram is Changing The Way Users See Stories. Here’s What This Means For You
Words by Louise Stanway
Instagram’s Stories feature currently allows users to share up to 100 slides of photos and videos on their account, lasting 24 hours before disappearing. For creators and businesses, Stories are a great tool to showcase a new product or products, host a Q&A session, provide coverage of news and events, and more. Now, that’s changing.
Instagram just announced it will be capping stories at just 3 slides and users will be given the option to “show all” if they wish to see the remaining content. The thinking behind this is to hide excessive posts.
So, what does this mean for those of us in the small business and non-profit space? It means we’re going to get very tactical with our posting. We should be considering how we can be planting a hook in those first 3 slides. It’s time to adopt a 10-step guide, a multi-slide quiz, or perhaps it’s a keep-tabbing-through-to-find-out reveal. Now is not the time to be re-sharing user content on those first few slides, before highlighting our own.
There are many ways to approach this, but the important takeaway is that great content matters—it’ll help set you apart and have users actively engaging with your stories, rather than skipping past them.
